First elected to Congress is 2002, Congressman Michael C. Burgess, M.D., now represents the 26th district of Texas on the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee which is responsible for health care, consumer protection, and energy laws. He was also elected by fellow Members to serve as the Vice Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, which generates ideas and legislative proposals for the GOP in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Before heading to Congress, Burgess practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Lewisville, Texas. He delivered more than 3,000 babies during his nearly 30 years in private practice.
Dedicated to improving America’s health care system, Dr. Burgess has worked to halt the spread of government-run health care, to reform private health care to strengthen options, and to modernize Medicare. In addition, he has worked to safeguard food, drugs, and consumer products, to build a strong national defense, to protect our Homeland, and to cut wasteful government spending. He is also fighting for energy independence, to make sure Americans keep more of their hard-earned money, and to transform the tax code into a simpler, fairer, flatter system.
After graduating from North Texas State University, now the University of North exas, Burgess received his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. He completed his residency programs at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and went on to receive a second Masters degree in Medical Management from the University of Texas at Dallas. He is also the founder of a private practice, Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates of Lewisville, former Chief of Staff for Lewisville Medical Center where most recently he served as Chief of Obstetrics.
Dr. Burgess has been married to his wife, Laura, for 34 years. They are proud parents of three grown children who are all graduates of Denton County Public Schools.
