Congressman Michael Burgess Kicks-Off Re-Election
Local doctor seeks to regain seat in the United States House of Representatives
Surrounded by hundreds of supporters, family and friends, Congressman Michael Burgess, M.D., officially launched his 2008 re-election campaign this past Saturday in Denton County. Saying he was “humbled and honored to serve Texas’s 26th district for the past 5 years,” Burgess made his case for voters to re-elect him next November. He has represented the district which includes Denton, Tarrant, Cooke, and Dallas counties since 2003.
“We’ve made our economy stronger, our Nation safer, and our classrooms more accountable. Now we need to build on this progress and achieve real results in health care,” commented the third-term Congressman.
Burgess is a respected, local physician who practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology for over 21 years, delivering more than 3000 babies. His experience and expertise give him a unique perspective into reforming medical care in America. “When you’ve experienced first-hand which parts of our health care system are broken, you have a much clearer idea of how to write the prescription to fix it,” said Burgess.
Since being elected in 2002, Congressman Burgess helped pass the six-year highway reauthorization bill, securing $18.5 million to fund local highway, transit and safety programs in the 26th district.
Re-elected in 2004 and in 2006, Congressman Burgess now represents District 26 on the high-profile House Energy and Commerce Committee, which is responsible for health care, the safety of food and drugs, energy and power. In addition, he is Vice Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee which designs and develops legislative proposals for consideration by the entire Congress.
“I took an oath of office when I became a doctor and when I became a Congressman to serve to the best of my abilities. I hope the people of the 26th district will vote to allow me to continue doing just that,” said Rep. Burgess.”
